This is an awesome guide and I want to add a few of my personal choices to it and provide more resources.
Note: I am, by no means, an expert.
Disclaimer: Some of the suggestions below may be missing features you are used to. It's free, roll with it. 😎
Level 1:
Another browser extension you should know about is LibRedirect. With it, you can pass links over to alternative sites to view the content. Be aware that the majority of the alternative sites are run by volunteers and enthusiasts; they don't always work 🙁 Small note: The name "Libre" gets used a lot by privacy-respecting and open source alternatives where previously they might have used "Free" or "Open".
Level 2:
Adobe Alternatives DuckDuckGo uses Bing for results, I also use StartPage for Google results. There is a desktop app for watching Youtube content called FreeTube that I recommend. It's a front-end for YouTube and Invidious servers (which re-stream YouTube content).
Level 3:
AdGuard is fine but if you are setting up a Raspberry Pi anyway, consider Pi-hole as an alternative option.
Level 4:
If, for some strange reason, you disregard the above guide and think that putting AdGuard on your phone is a reasonable alternative to the suggestions here, I would suggest that you DON'T. It may be different now but when I tried it the Android app it asked me to install a certificate. It does this so that it can modify websites you visit to block more ads. The downside is that it also allows them to read everything that would normally be encrypted. They may not be doing anything nefarious with it, but it's a risk I'm not taking. So, if a third-party you don't trust asks you to install a certificate, DON'T.
Level 5:
Awesome Piracy If you don't want to sign up for usenet and prefer to use torrents, get a good VPN and lock the torrent client down to only use the VPN connection. There are torrent tests you can do to see if your IP is exposed. In your VPN client, pick a country where copyright isn't a word! 😉
Level 6:
In addition to ReVanced, I want to also promote the app NewPipe which can be downloaded from the F-Droid store. F-Droid is an app store for your Android phone that hosts open-source apps and tells you every dirty detail of what each app does, privacy-wise. NewPipe is a YouTube alternative/Invidious front-end for Android.
Level 7:
Custom Windows playbooks are awesome and while I don't know Revi very well, but I will definitely check it out! Just browsing the docs I noticed that they default to the Brave browser. This is a personal opinion but I don't trust Brave as much as open-source alternatives. They have tried some interesting attempts at monetization in the past that make me suspect. Use the browser you are comfortable with instead and use a well-known, good adblock like uBlock Origin or uBlock Origin Lite. In addition to Firefox and its derivatives there is also Chromium and Ungoogled-Chromium if you want something familiar to Chrome.
Level 8:
Seriously, use Linux if you can (and if you do, make backups of your important files first!). Ignore Linux users that tell you to use Arch or an Arch derivative, it's not for beginners. When stuff breaks you just have to figure it out. Ubuntu, Mint, and Pop! are great for beginners but if you play games they may not be the most up-to-date for that. (Pop is especially behind at the moment 😭 but I'm hoping that changes soon) I personally use Fedora which is also great for beginners, is very up-to-date, and never gives me problems. However it does require one post-install setup step to replace the media codecs with "non-free" ones to make some media playback situations work. Other than that, it works so well that I actually find it boring compared to the usual amount of tinkering I'm used to! Fedora has two notable derivatives: Nobara, which is slightly tweaked for improved gaming performance and includes the media tweaks, and Bazzite which is similar to SteamOS but for general hardware (it's for gaming-specific setups like handhelds and living room gaming where you need a controller-focused interface).
Level ???:
You can host your own websites (webapps) made by others! I fell down this rabbit hole after Google killed Reader and I found self-hosted RSS alternatives. Later, I set up Docker and now I run dozens of useful webapps for all sorts of things! Try stuff out!
Hopefully this is helpful to someone. Feel free to ask me general questions about any of the above. If you have setup questions or technical issues, please contact the creators of the above projects first, as I can't cover everything everywhere. I try to, though! 😂
In case anyone is curious, I'm a software developer (mostly in web development) with a lot of general IT skills and troubleshooting experience and I spend a lot of my time tinkering with Linux, FreeBSD, self-hosted apps, open-source software, and supporting Windows systems that are all over the place. I have experience going back to MS-DOS, using Linux since the late 90's and have been running Linux as my primary system for over 5 years now (since Valve released Proton).
Thanks for reading!
genuinely wild to me when I go to someone's house and we watch TV or listen to music or something and there are ads. I haven't seen an ad in my home since 2005. what do you mean you haven't set up multiple layers of digital infrastructure to banish corporate messaging to oblivion before it manifests? listen, this is important. this is the 21st century version of carving sigils on the wall to deny entry to demons or wearing bells to ward off the Unseelie. come on give me your router admin password and I'll show you how to cast a protective spell of Get Thee Tae Fuck, Capital

Shine's advice is spot on, btw. Like. Perfect.
My only concern about reccing linux is whether people are going to be able to find help if they have problems and honestly the fact that you're willing to reach out and ask questions is a very good sign that you're going to be good at finding help for your problems.
I don't know if @shinelikethunder said it anywhere in the posts about this but it's a very good idea to go to the support forums of any distros you're considering and ask around *before* install and see if people can give you tips about the kinds of things that they like the most or that caused them the most problems. This is how I identified the distro that plays nice with my tiny ancient Eee PC.
And it'll let you know what the culture of the forums are to see how to navigate them before you have a problem.
Also I second the recc of ThinkBooks, but if you're getting a laptop for college and you're aware this will be an investment and are interested in doing upgrades yourself, you might be a good candidate for a FrameWork Laptop (and it's one of the laptops you can get without the OS preinstalled - my suggestion for bare metal is because it saves you the cost of the OS but sometimes it's worth that extra money to know you've got a fallback OS if everything goes wrong trying to get linux set up, but as you can see at that link it does add $200 to the cost). Framework laptops are built to be very easy to upgrade and to replace parts on so that you don't end up replacing your whole computer every couple of years. You should be able to rely on a good 5-7 years of life out of a framework laptop, which works out to $200 a year on the high end.
That said: you can totally get a decent thinkbook with a windows pro license (less invasive than home but more expensive) and decent specs (512gb SSD, 16GB RAM, i5-12th gen) for around $750 pre-tax and personally I don't think that they are all that difficult to open up and upgrade. You could always get one of those and test some distros. I'm more familiar with Mint and Lite than Ubuntu and Mint seems to have really approachable forums and documentation on getting started.
Like, if you were my neighbor and asking me this I'd have zero hesitation to point you toward linux because I could help you with issues in person, so if you can find yourself a linux buddy (or make linux buddies online) then it's worthwhile to give it a go.
computer/firefox anon, no questions this time. just my undying thanks! as tumblr users say, i am kissing you on the mouth etc etc. huge thank you to you and everyone else who added stuff in the replies or reblogs — i feel much more confident about this now<33. tldr: y’all are awesome, thanks a bunch!
happy to help! and i think i said this deep down under the read-more in the first response to your Linux ask, but it's worth highlighting--@compusever's advice to get a Windows 10 or 11 Home laptop and do what you can with the privacy settings is not AT ALL incompatible with trying Linux or eventually replacing Windows with it. once you've booted up the computer from an installation USB drive, most distros will offer a temporary "preview" version of the OS that runs from the USB drive without changing anything on the computer. you can try Ubuntu, mess around, see if you like it, wipe the USB drive, put Mint on it, and try that; if you go for the full install you can dual-boot and keep Windows around in hard-drive quarantine in case you need it.
in other words, you don't have to take the entire plunge all at once! but i suspect that if you don't have pre-existing desktop UI preferences, and you strongly prefer a device that won't pester/spy on/micromanage you, a beginner-friendly Linux will be easier to use than any of the current versions of Windows.
btw, here's the install guide for Mint: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ compared to the Ubuntu one, which goes out of its way to be friendly and dead simple, the Mint guide is... a lot closer to what you can expect from most Linux tutorials, lmao. i especially love that the very second step explains a bit about why it wants you to check that the file didn't get corrupted in the download process, immediately starts providing commands you can copy into a Linux terminal to generate cryptographic checksums, and only then adds a "how to do this on Windows" link... to a forum post with commands you can paste into a Windows terminal. (meanwhile, Ubuntu gives you a download link and then displays an unobtrusive "here's how to verify the file if you want" with a one-off command and a link to more info.) even the friendliest Linux tends to be built on the labor of absolute nerds who are into this stuff as a hobby, and they are very helpful, but be warned that they often have a wildly skewed frame of reference about what "normal computer use" consists of.

Oh hey since you just reblogged a post about this, can I get some tech advice? I have two old Dell laptops that are running slow bc (I suspect) dell has some chip installed that can tell if the charger is Dell brand and throttles the cpu if not. And they have since stopped recognizing their chargers. If I install linux, will that fix the issue? Or is it a hardware problem?
So there's not really a way that Dell can do that but realistically the computers are probably just running slow because they're old (5 years is the usable time we estimate for business laptops; after that they may continue *working* but they'll likely be too slow for our customers to consider them good work computers without some significant upgrades). But if they aren't recognizing the chargers there are 3 possibilities I can think of off the top of my head:
1 - It's a battery issue, not a charger issue. Over time batteries fail and will stop holding a charge no matter how long they're plugged in. The solution to this is to replace the battery, which you can usually do for between 20-45USD on amazon
2 - It's a charger issue. Your AC adapters may have both independently failed, it's possible! Low-cost non-OEM chargers often don't have particularly long lifespans, and replacing them may be the way to fix this.
Second possible charger issue is that it may be the wrong power level for the batteries. Sometimes you might look up something like "Lenovo e15 charger" and you'll see one that looks right but it turns out you've ordered a 45w instead of a 90w, and that is a pretty big problem. You need to make sure you're getting something with the exact specs for your specific computer. Here's an article about it.
3 - It's a charging port issue. This is one of the more common problems we see on older computers; basically over time with enough plugging and unplugging the port that connects your charger to the motherboard comes loose. This is something that can be a relatively cheap and easy fix in some cases, or a really difficult fix if the thing is soldered directly to the board. Here's a video of someone replacing the charging port on a Dell Laptop for a general idea of what kind of work might be involved in fixing this.
Okay! Now for some basic troubleshooting! Please test for the following:
If the computers don't power on at all while the AC adapter is plugged in then the issue is either the AC adapter or the power port.
If the computers power on while plugged in but they don't hold a charge, the issue is the battery.
If the battery holds a charge for some amount of time (over an hour) but takes forever to charge, then the problem is that you aren't using the correct AC adapter.
If the battery doesn't charge, the computer doesn't come on, and it's the correct AC adapter you can possibly test the adapter with a voltmeter, test the adapter on another computer with the same power requirements, or disassemble the computer and check the power port connection to the motherboard.
But yeah if the computers are powering on at all, right off the top of my head I'd guess either it's a battery issue or a voltage issue with the adapter.
Linux would not help at all with those issues (though hopefully you've got someplace to start looking to resolve those problems now), but if your computer is running slow because it has older hardware that was designed for a different era of computer use (which can be as recent as 5 or so years ago depending on the specs) then a Linux install will likely help. Though keep in mind that if you do an OS swap you will not be able to run any of the programs you currently have for those laptops on those laptops. I think that Linux is good and want more people to use it generally, but I recommend Linux to new Linux users primarily when the computer they're thinking of installing it on is used mostly as a web browsing machine. An old computer with Linux Lite will generally run faster than an old computer with Windows, but if you're trying to get the old computer to play modern games it isn't going to be fast with either OS.

Note
So here's a maybe-dumb question that's fairly abstract so apologies if it's too off topic. When I buy jeans, I'm not looking for the cheapest jeans, or the longest lasting jeans, I'm trying to find the best cost-per-wear. There's a little guesswork, but honestly you can make pretty good educated guesses. Intuitively, this same process is also how I'd like to pick computers, but it's not the terms I tend to hear people speak in. I'm not really familiar with computer hardware, and I've generally relied on other people's advice. I mostly use laptops for file processing, web browsing, and occasionally web scraping, and it feels as though I should be able to figure out what machine is going to let me do that at the lowest cost per year-of-operation. Am I off base or missing something? I'm currently using thumb drives and an old Chromebook running Linux lite that freezes randomly and completely if you use it for more than 45min and I would like to... not be doing that. I have the cash on hand that I could buy a fancy new laptop if it was going to be the best bang for my buck, but it seems like I might be better off buying a crappy used one with the expectation of replacing it a year from now. The best I've ever done by this metric was getting four years out of a used Lenovo yoga I got for $600, is trying to match that the best I can hope for? Is there a simple way to calculate this, or a known winner on this axis?
There's no real simple way to calculate this because failure is variable; some people get fifteen years out of a laptop, and someone else might get only three.
At work we tend to estimate that there are 5-7 years of reliable life in a desktop and 3-5 years in a laptop. If you can find a $200 used 8-year-old desktop that's working, you may be able to get two years out of it, or it may blow a capacitor on the motherboard in a month and you'll have lost out on that purchase.
The reliability after a certain age is the real issue that makes this hard to figure out. If you're trying to get the best bang for your buck out of a cheap computer and you're looking used, I'd recommend looking at things that are no more than 3-5 years old and you're likely to be pretty happy with the results and to have a pretty good return on investment.
Generally I think that $100 a year is a reasonable expectation for comfortable computing. Sometimes that looks like getting a new laptop for $700 and using it for 7 years, sometimes that looks like getting a 5-year-old desktop for $200 and using it for two years. That suits my level of computing pretty well; people who are more intensive computer users might want to spend more, people who are lower-key computer users might want to spend less. It certainly sounds like you may want to invest in something better than what you're working with (either of the laptops that I posted today might be up your alley), but yeah it's impossible to get an exact figure for the best possible way to spend your money on computers because it's heavily dependent on use type, user habits, and whether the manufacturer's line was having a good year or a bad year or if the processor for a particular year had a flaw or if a refurbished computer got knocked around a lot by previous users.

USB Digital Microscope Software For Mac OSX
Some manufacturers provide Apple specific software for their scopes. But often Digital USB microscope hardware DOES NOT come with any MacOS specific software to control zoom functions or capture still snapshots, time-sequence or full motion video clips with. However, because these are USB Video Class - UVC compatible microscopes, they should provide BASIC functionality on any modern Macintosh running MacOS Mojave or Sierra, OSX ElCapitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Lion or Leopard when attached to a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 SuperSpeed port.

Here's a link to Digital Viewer App - OSX 10.5+ compatible general purpose Mac microscope software from Plugable Technologies. It works with any UVC compatible webcam or scope and supports VGA up to 1080p and higher HD resolution depending on the camera's capabilities. that you can download from the company's software page. There is also an 3rd-party app called ToupView is available for download here. It seems to be hardware manufacturer specific and likey polls the USB bus to ascertain if an AmScope brand USB camera device is attached to function.

Digital Pan and Zoom control over your scope's camera image might be something you need. You can download a free trial of iGlasses webcam control software app from eCamm or the affordable Mactaris Webcam app and see if it helps you achieve the zoom and magnification control you need to get the most out of your digital microscope or inspection scope. You may also need it for webcam image adjustment to control camera brightness, contrast, color saturation and other image enhancements. All told, there's decent support for digital microscopy on Apple platforms. Some may even be usable on an iPad tablet or iPhone when paired with a USB camera connection kit dongle in your handheld device's 30-pin or Lightning dock connector.

Uncover an Epic Sci-Fi Story with Star Deck Roguelite RPG
Tumblr media
Star Deck deckbuilding sci-fi roguelite RPG game aiming to release on Linux and Windows PC, but has a playable Demo. Developer Psyched Studios dedication and creativity are the driving forces behind this project. Working to make its way onto Steam. Let's dive right into Star Deck, the upcoming release from Psyched Studios. Where you take on the role of a space smuggler, navigating a galaxy under The Federation's control. Your mission? To save your kidnapped brother. The game is a mix of adventure and strategy while blending elements from popular titles like Slay the Spire and Smash Up. The unique twist in Star Deck is the rogue-lite approach. You're not just going through a linear storyline. Instead, every run is a new experience with randomized levels and diverse settings. The demo's already out, giving us a taste of what's to come.
I'm intrigued by the ideas of a Linux launch. I'm developing with Unity, but if it's as easy as it is to port to Mac, then sure, why not!?
Developer Alex Elkman, who has no prior experience with Unity 3D and Linux support, but intends to create a native build for his project. Which is impressive, since he's working solo on Star Deck. No word on Steam Deck, yet. In the demo, you've got two main tools at your disposal: the Blaster and the Ice Hammer. Each offers a distinct style. The Blaster is all about managing your ammo for those swift, impactful hits, while the Ice Hammer leans towards defense, freezing your foes in their tracks. And it's not just about these weapons. There's a whole array of non-weapon cards you can collect from events or shops, adding layers to your strategy. Very playable on Linux, via Proton.

What's really unique is how you'll start each run in the Star Deck full release. You'll choose from 5-6 weapons, each with its deck of over 30 cards. You can also equip two weapons at a time, blending their styles. As you progress, you'll collect more cards, either as battle rewards, event gifts, or shop buys. Due to let you tailor your deck to suit your strategy, experimenting with different combos for the best results. So, what do we have in a nutshell? Star Deck is a sci-fi adventure where you play as Rowan Lightstorm, the smuggler hero. You're trekking across 4-6 unique levels, each with its own challenges and settings. Your toolkit?
